Held on the second Saturday of August every year, Nehru Boat race is the most colorful and vibrant sports event in Kerala. Started in the year 1952, it was first held to welcome Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister to Alappuzha. The trophy to the winner of the race was also awarded by Pandit Nehru himself, thus came the name Nehru Boat race. It is held in the Punnamada lake in Alappuzha. With every passing year, the popularity of the event has been steadily increasing and now is famous among tourist from all over the world. Many from across the globe come and join the locales on the banks of this scenic lake surrounded by leaning coconut trees.

These boats can accommodate more than 100 people and still cut through the water with swiftness of a snake. These cheering groups also sing inspirational songs whose rhythms are absolutely matching with the rhythm of the oars. All the boats are splendidly decorated with different silver and shining brass ornaments. The teams are divided according to villages and the track length for the race is around 1400 meters (1.4 km).
