Lakshadweep is a group of 36 coral islands that nestle on the southwest zone of Indian sub-continent. Crowning the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep is the smallest and most charming union territory of India. You might have traveled to many islands in different parts of the world, but Lakshadweep is like nothing you would have ever seen or even imagined. The amalgamation of sun, sand and sea create a magic that is seldom performed by nature. This tropical islands lies approximately 300 km from the Kerala coast and cover an area of nearly 32 sq km. Bordered by silvery beaches and surrounded by the most awesome system of corals, the many Lakshadweep islands are the new rage among adventure tourists and travelers looking for solitary vacations.

The Past of Paradise

Not much is known about the history of Lakshadweep. Historians say that the first settlement on Lakshadweep islands was probably of Buddhist people. Many statues of Lord Buddha were found on the islands from around 9th century, which probably triggered this argument and testified it. However, today Islam is the most dominant religion on the islands. According to history writers, Islam came to Lakshadweep with the arrival of Saint Mohinuddin. He converted the already inhabiting people to Islam thus making it the main religion of Lakshadweep. Out of the 36 islands, only 11 are inhabited. Even though the population of this archipelago hovers around measly 60 thousand, the culture here shows as many varied hew as any place else. Visit during the major Muslim festivals and witness the transformation of a sedate society into a community of unimaginable energy and enthusiasm. Kerala being the closest state to Lakshadweep, it hugely influences the culture. The main language spoken here is Malayalam.

Specialty of Lakshadweep

The main thing that has made the world sit up and take notice of Lakshadweep is the possibility of adventure sports in this tropical paradise. Adventure enthusiasts from all over the world are coming to Lakshadweep to get a taste of water sports here. One can experience water sports in many parts of India, but it is the presence of coral reefs that sets Lakshadweep apart from the rest. Swimming alongside schools of fishes and amidst the living corals is an experience beyond words. Tourists also like to indulge in angling and surfing.

Lakshadweep is one place that still remains exactly the same way man found it. And the tourism department wishes to keep it unchanged. That is why out of the 36 islets, only 6 has been thrown open for tourism and only three to non-Indians. From the time you land in Lakshadweep, till the time you leave, you are supposed to abide by certain rules. The number of tourists allowed on an island at a time is restricted, so it advised that you book a ticket on the flight or ship to Lakshadweep well in advance. You can reach Agatti by flight or by ship from Kochi. There are cruises to all the other islands from Kochi as well as Agatti. There is a helicopter service as well to Bangaram from Agatti.

Not many places in the world come close to the aura and charm possessed by the islands in Lakshadweep. No wonder they are considered among the best holiday destinations in the world.
